Welcome to Dowry Square
Dowry Square in Hotwells, Bristol, is a beautiful Georgian square and gorgeous inner city green space, with a vibrant history, loved and tended by the local community.
This summer, Dowry Square is taking part as usual in the Clifton & Hotwells Open Gardens weekend on Sat 6th & Sun 7th June, when we’ll be hosting our usual mix of choirs and activities over the course of the weekend, plus refreshments and delicious cakes from our resident bakers.
On Sun 7th June (the 2nd day of Open Gardens weekend), we’re also launching our 2026 Dowry Square history tours programme. New this year, the tours now include visits inside two historic Dowry Square properties – the former Pneumatic Institution where Thomas Beddoes and Humphry Davy had fun with nitrous oxide and No. 12, where William Pennington the Master of Ceremonies at the Hotwell Spa lived in the 18th century. The tours start and finish in the Dowry Square garden and also include a cup of tea or coffee, and a cake from Dowry Square’s many bakers.

Over the winter, in response to two dramatic accidents where cars mounted pavements and crashed into buildings, Dowry Square residents have been involved in the Hotwells Corner campaign to not only reduce the speed limit on Hotwell Road to 20mph, but in due course for a range of other improvements to make the area to be implemented to make them safer and greener.
